RE-INTERPRETATION OF THE LIEBESTOD IN SALVATORE SCIARRINO’S «LUCI MIE TRADITRICI»

Abstract: The article is devoted to the study of one of the most popular operas by the Italian composer Salvatore Sciarrino «Luci mie traditrici». Analyzing the disposition of the characters and their relationships, figurative and semantic oppositions and the way they function in the libretto and music, compositional and dramatic features, the author identifies archetypical features that allow to attribute Sciarrino's work to the actantial model of the Liebestod. When comparing the meanings of the “eternal” theme in the interpretations of Wagner and Sciarrino, the author reveals the re-interpretation of the concept by the Italian maestro. The final scene of the opera manifests the surrender of love, reflecting the recurring theme of Sciarrino's theatre works – the inability to love due to global miscommunication and alienation of people in the modern world.

Keywords: Salvatore Sciarrino, «Luci mie traditrici», opera, Liebestod, Wagner, re-interpretation

THE IMAGE OF SAINT GEORGE IN ORAL AND ICON PAINTING TRADITION OF ANCIENT KARELIA THROUGH THE EXAMPLE OF SPECIFIC MONUMENTS

Abstract: The article covers the issues of style, artistic and linguistic form through the example of religious poems and icons from the areas of Karelia of the late Middle Ages, dedicated to St. George. Moreover, the emphasis is placed on the themes related to pre-Christian agrarian-magical symbolism of the image, which was embodied in poetic texts. The comparative analysis of the sources is used as the main method. The conclusions suggest the idea of a possibility of several scientific approaches to the research, including research studies at the intersection of various art forms.

Keywords: religious poems, Saint George, icons, hagiographic text, dragon-fight motive, style, the Baroque, peasant mentality, crude woodcuts, the process of folklorization
