“SUITE IN THE OLD STYLE”: VERSION BY ALFRED SCHNITTKE AND BORIS NAPREEV

Abstract: The article compares two “Suites in the old style” by Alfred Schnittke (1972) and Boris Napreev (1984). Both compositions emerged on the basis of ready-made music. The suite by Schnittke is made from some fragments of two music scores for two films (“Adventures of the dentist”, 1965 and “Sport, sport, sport”, 1970; both directed by Elem Klimov). The suite by Napreev was extracted from the “Northern Album” for violoncello and piano (1983–1984), as it was already there as an independent cycle. The article analyzes the source material of two works, the principles of construction of two suites that the author used when creating the new opus on the basis of the existing music. The analysis leads to the conclusion that the suites do not have many similarities. The suite by Schnittke is a stylization. This work is made of finished material and is thus close to cycles of the 19th century – suites from ballet numbers or from music to dramatic performances. The suite by Napreev resembles work on a model, it is originally wholesome. The work by Napreev continues and develops the traditions of the Baroque dancing suite. In general, despite the modest size, each composition reflected the ideas and directions of the creative search of the authors.

REVIVAL OF THE ARCHAIC SCALE IN SETO TRADITIONAL MUSIC: SOCIAL AND PEDAGOGICAL ASPECTS

Abstract: Archaic scale in Seto traditional music – one-three-semitone scale – has almost disappeared from spontaneous singing tradition. As this unique scale has become an important component of Seto community identity, and as it sounds fascinating as well as exotic, there is a movement to revitalize it. The unfamiliar musical system needs conscious studying and special learning methodology, which is introduced in the present article.

USING COMPUTER TECHNOLOGIES FOR ANALYZING THE SOUND OF THE KOMI-ZYRIAN AEROPHONE KUIMA CHIPSAN

Abstract: The article deals with the analysis of the sound of traditional Komi-Zyrian instruments (kuima chipsan) by using modern computer technologies. The spectral analysis of the sounds and the comparative study of computer and acoustical transcriptions of musical instrumental tunes allow to "see" the traditional music from a new perspective and also to determine more accurately the acoustic properties of musical instruments that are not caught by hearing.
