PETROZAVODSK STATE GLAZUNOV CONSERVATOIRE: A SEMICENTENNIAL EXPERIENCE AND NEW REALITIES | 1-18

Abstract: Dedicated to the 55th anniversary of the Petrozavodsk State Glazunov Conservatoire, the article analyzes the experience of the university's semicentennial history as well as the contribution of multiple generations of the teaching staff to its development. The author evaluates the historical context in which the conservatoire's activities were carried out, while emphasizing those issues that are currently within the conservatoire's human and logistical capabilities. The author pays particular attention to such a resource for the development of the university as the Department of Music of the Finno-Ugric peoples, which has no parallel in Russian conservatoires.

ALEXANDER GLAZUNOV THROUGH THE LENS OF THE CONTEMPORARIES: THE VERSION OF THE RUSSIAN MUSICAL NEWSPAPER | 19-32

Abstract: The article reconstructs the image of A. Glazunov, one of the greatest composers of the Silver Age, as portrayed in the Russian Musical Newspaper (1894–1918), the leading Russian magazine of the era. Analyzing a broad range of materials from different sections during this period (from the Chronicles to the Biographical Sketch) makes it possible to extensively outline the major aspects in the interpretation of Glazunov's music, his creative method, style features, and even personal characteristics. It is significant that a wide variety of authors, including authoritative critics and musicians from Russia and Europe (N. Findeisen, A. Ossovsky, J. Engel, I. Lipaev, G. Wood, etc.), in spite of having their independent views, nevertheless, demonstrate sufficient unanimity of opinion, highly appreciating Glazunov as one of the important figures in modern musical life.

ALEXANDER GLAZUNOV’S FIGURE IN THE SOVIET MUSIC MAGAZINE (1933–1951) | 33-43

Abstract: A receptive research based on the material of a specialized Soviet music magazine Soviet Music (published in modern Russia under the name Music Academy) analyzes the image of A. K. Glazunov during the Stalin era. The narrative of the magazine from 1933 to 1951 included only a few materials about him, mainly in the epistolary genre. In addition to recognizing Glazunov as an outstanding symphonic composer, teacher and public figure, the authors were first to raise the issue of Tchaikovsky's influence on him; however, Glazunov's works did not seem relevant from the standpoint of Soviet musicology.

IN OPPOSITION TO CONSERVATOIRE TEACHING: THE FORMATION OF THE PROFESSIONAL IDENTITY OF THE NATIONAL MUSICOLOGY IN THE RUSSIAN INSTITUTE OF ART HISTORY IN THE 1920s | 63-90

Abstract: The article deals with an institutional aspect of the formation of one of the first Russian research schools in musicology – the department of music history at the Russian Institute of Art History in Petrograd under the guidance of B. V. Asafyev. Having been founded in 1920 as an educational faculty, it was dynamically transformed during the following years into a productive scientific and research hub with a strongly marked innovational and multidisciplinary orientation. The author analyzes the organizational structure of the department, commonly accepted practices of research cooperation and student teaching, as well as external circumstances related to life realities of post-revolutionary Russia that caused the given effect.

FUGUES WRITTEN FOR EDUCATIONAL PURPOSES BY ALEXANDER K. GLAZUNOV IN THE MANUSCRIPTS DEPARTMENT OF THE RUSSIAN NATIONAL LIBRARY | 91-106

Abstract: The article presents for the first time the autograph of the educational works, composed by Alexander K. Glazunov in the process of mastering the fugue, stored in the Department of Manuscripts of the Russian National Library (Glazunov fund – F. 187, No. 642). The manuscript dates back to June-July 1881 and contains a number of works of various kinds: the recording of subjects and other material for fugal composing, an exposition of Fugue No. 3 from the first book of the Well-Tempered Clavier by J. S. Bach transposed to Des-dur, as well as fragments and entire compositions on his own and borrowed musical themes. The set of tasks quite fully represents a specific stage in the development of the composition technique by a young musician. The article clarifies the dating of Glazunov’s fugue mastering, the sources used by the composer, including E. F. Richter's A Treatise on Fugue, as well as details of the history of processing the manuscript in the National Library of Russia.

FROM THE HISTORY OF RUSSIAN ÉMIGRÉ MUSIC: POÈME FOR STRING QUARTET BY JOSEPH STRIMER | 123-139

Abstract: The article is the first study of the composer, teacher, and arranger Joseph (Osip) Strimer (1881–1962) in Russian musicology. Reconstructing Strimer’s biography on the basis of accessible documents and memoirs reveals that after emigrating in 1919 he played an important role in Russian musical émigré circles. Strimer’s Poème for string quartet (1919), written for Poulet's Quartet, is an example of the composer’s early style influenced by Russian and European music at the cusp of the 19th and 20th centuries. Generic and stylistic parallels with the genre of Eugène Ysaÿe’s violin poem and Art Nouveau style in Russian and European music of that time become evident.

MUSICAL PETERSBURG OF THE GLAZUNOV’S PERIOD: THE OEUVRE OF J. BLEICHMANN | 140-153

Abstract: The article provides a general overview of the life and work of the St. Petersburg composer Julius Ivanovich Bleichmann. The music of the currently forgotten personality, who worked in the time of the vigorous activity of A. K. Glazunov during the Silver Age era, was not only performed on concert stage but was also popular among performers and listeners in secular halls of salons. The stereotype formed during the Soviet period regarding the frivolous mood of salons, as well as the interpretation of the Silver Age era as the peak of the activity of the St. Petersburg Conservatory employees are causing discussions among researchers nowadays with increasing frequency. The problem of musical society stratification and parity between professionals and amateurs makes it possible to fill in gaps in the history of the musical culture of the Silver Age, rediscover forgotten names, and bring Russian musicology closer to the reconstruction of the complete picture of art at the cusp of the 19th and 20th centuries.
